The Rohingya are a stateless Muslim minority in Myanmar. They have been denied citizenship, because the state of Myanmar believes that all of the Rohingya are from Bangladesh thus they aren’t natural born citizens of Myanmar (Lederer 2020). They have been denied citizenship since 1982, rendering them stateless and without any rights, even though most of the Rohingya have been there for generations. In August 2017, Myanmar’s military launched an attack against the Rohingya in response to an attack by the Rohingya’s insurgent group (Lederer, 2019). In response over 700,000 refugees have fled to Bangladesh hoping to avoid the harsh attacks from the military (UNHCR, n.d.). Refugees that have fled reported widespread rape and the use of arsons by the Myanmar military (Lederer, 2020). The United Nations has spoken up about this crisis and have labeled it ethnocide and condemned the arbitrary arrests, torture, and rape and deaths in detention (Lederer, 2019). I would also give the data quality a 3 just because of amount of information and the detailed accounts of Rohingya crisis.
