Macedonians are one of the poorest ethnic groups residing in the country (Yakova, 2019). In 2003, organizations supporting the Macedonian people estimated their population between 120,000 and 350,000 (Minority Rights Group, 2015). Albania only recognizes Macedonians living in the Mala Prespa area, and Macedonians living outside this historic minority zones have a difficult time registering their ethnic identity (Minority Rights Group, 2015). In 2005, Moreover, Macedonians living outside minority zones reported that they did not have access to education in the Macedonian language (Minority Rights Group, 2015). When the 2001 census did not include a category for Macedonians, thus leading to a boycott in filling it out (Minority Rights Group, 2015).
