Anuak people have been targeted by the Ethiopian government, which has been seizing land from Anuak and driving them out of their homes (Minority Rights Group, n.d.). Ancestral Anuak lands are rich with gold and oil reserves. The possibility of profit is incentivizing the government to push the Anuak out of their land (McGill, 2004). In December of 2003, the Anuak experienced targeted killings by the Ethiopian National Defense Force (ENDFs) (Human Rights Watch, 2005a). Over a hundred military personnel participated in killing adult Anuak men, and raping women (Human Rights Watch, 2005). 500 to 600 Anuak men have been imprisoned without a trial, reportedly being subject to torture (Human Rights Watch, 2005b). Soldiers broke into homes and also burned crops to prevent people who escaped from coming back. 400 citizens have been reported killed (Human Rights Watch, 2005a). When asked, government officials have denied any wrongdoing, stating that the 2,000 Anuak who had fled were only enjoying their right of free movement (McGill, 2004). I would give the data quality a 3 because of detailed amount of information about this incidence and overall treatment of the Anuak people.
